Did you know that Mother’s Day in the UK is a religous day of observance and always falls on the fourth Sunday of lent? During the 16th century, people returned to their mother church for a service to be held on the fourth Sunday in Lent. This became the common date to celebrate Mothers on this one Sunday each year.
Did you also know that Mother’s Day in the USA was started by a woman Named Anna Jarvis on the second Sunday in May 1908, three years after she lost her own mother (May 9th)? This first service was held at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in memory of her mother and to honor all the mothers.
As this celebration grew, the USA did not want to use the same date as the UK therefore Mother’s Day in the USA always fall on the Sunday closest to Anna Jarvis’ birthday.
Anna Jarvis in her later life tried to get Mother’s Day off the calender because it became too commercialized.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL THE MOTHERS EVERYWHERE!
